Stuck again trying to reinstall x-plane in linux

Never having been able to make x-plane work under linux(plenty have done it) I redo the installation.

I have the 7 dvd set of x-plane. To install it for linux I've downlloaded the binary gz file. Having made it executable I execute it...

andrew]# ./X-Plane-DVD-Install
./X-Plane-DVD-Install: error while loading shared libraries: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

So I create a link to the file not found by the installer

andrew]# ln -s /home/progs/ /usr/local/lib/
ln: création d'un lien symbolique `/usr/local/lib/' vers `/home/progs/': Le fichier existe.

So the file and the link exist but the installer won't run!

Oui BIEN, mais où l'installateur compte-t-il trouver le fichier? S'il regarde quelque part autre que /usr/local/lib et /home/progs alors il ne le trouvera toujours pas.

Vous devez consulter la documentation.

(Good grief that was hard work! I mean to say...)

Yes OK, but where does the installer expect to find the library? If it is looking somewhere other than /usr/local/lib and /home/progs then it still won't find it.

You need to consult the binary documentation.

(I hope I didn't mangle the French too much - I wasn't confident enough to use bibliothèque for "library" or binaire for a "binary" file since I suspect the computer terms are different... and I am guessing "l'installateur".)
