strange problem with Emerging gentoo packages

I just setup gentoo on my machine having some problem with emerging packages from cdz or portage using cd for packages i use export PKGDIR=/mnt/cdrom.

then emerge --useonlypkg xchat and tried this aswll emerge -K packagename no use

im getting these messages

emerging by path is broken and may not always work

you need to adjust PKGDIR to emerge this package
when im trying to install gnome getting this error.

im using kernel version 2.6.9.any help would be appreciated.according to error itz indicated to adjust the PKGDIR but how to adust it which is what i dont get it.

Just quessing but couldn't you just copy the files from CD to your /usr/portage/distfiles and emerge packages as normal?
