strange dir fonts in virtual consoles during X session

New linux user running slackware 10.2
sorry if this question has an obvious answer or has been covered. I ran searches all night with no answer, even asked a friend of mine who's an old slack vet.

As I'm new to linux, when i found out i could run virtual consoles with ctr+alt Fx during an x session, i was pretty stoked. However, when X is running and i switch to one of the other consoles, log in, and CD /; ls all of my Dir's are displayed in a weird unreadable font. Once i quit my X session they will all go back to normal.

Friend of mine suggested i use the reset command, didn't help.

I know that most times things like this are inexperienced operator error, so if anyone has any suggestions for a newbie they're all appreciated.

thx.

Still searching for a solution to this. Talked it over with three more slackware vets. No one has ever heard of this happening. Any thoughts appreciated.
