stopping X

I am running Red Hat linux 6 in which the X program is set to load on boot up. How do I stop it from automatically loading next time I boot up

How do I shut down X. I assume this is the Xfree86 program. I wish to install a newer version of Xfree86 and assume that I must shut it down before doing so.

Also I am working from a PC running windows 95 and need to transfer files on floppy disk because I have no internet connection or network card on the linux machine, so how do I put together a file that I have split over numerous floppies on the PC and be sure I get the complete file on the linux machine. I know how to mount a dos floppy, so that is not a prob. Thanks for your help beforehand.

not sure on the floppy and transferring files but...

to make it so X doesn't boot up initially at startup, all you need to do is edit your /etc/inittab file and change your runlevel from 5 to 3.
