Stoping the X server under Mandrake

How do you stop the X server under Mandrake 10?

I keep getting the error

Quote:
Fatal server error:
Server is already active for display 0
If this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.X0-lock
and start again.
I can't find the /tmp/.X0-lock

I need to stop the X server to install a Graphics Driver.
I know that to exit I simply Press "ctrl + Alt + esc.

But this does not seem to be stoping the service.
I know If I press The Window Icon I can get back to X but is this actually what I am doing?

ls -a /tmp/*
rm /tmp/.X0-lock
init 3

execute those commands in a shell.
It will show you that, the .X0-lock begins with a . , thats why you can't find it.
It will delete this lock.
and init 3 will effectively start runlevel 3, which doesnt automatically start the X server.
Install your driver.
Then reboot.
or re-issue, init 5 .
