Still mysterious Xine player: can't play movies requiring DivX5 codecs
Hi everybody,
Like i said in my last post I'm new to Linux (SuSE 9.1 Professional) but mostly really like it.
Anyway, all the players (Kaffeine, Xine, ..) can't play movies because they require a DivX
5 codec. Codec 4 is installed and I did google the DivX 5 codec rather extensively, even wrote DivX.
Would be really great if some could tell me where I can find and download the required DivX5 codec? BTW, in Knoppix 3.4 Xine did work just fine, i.e. it played all the movies that require the DivX 5 codec. Is there maybe a way to copy the codec from Knoppix into SuSE? If yes, where on the Knoppix CD is the codec located?
Still mysterious Xine player: can't play movies requiring DivX5 codecs
I got a big file full of codecs at the Mplayer site. I do not
know if DivX5 is included or not, but its the biggest
pack of codecs I could find on the Web. Just do a
Google for Mplayer and you should find it.
I suspect Knoppix worked because they had the code
embedded already. There are all kinds of patent laws
squeezing down on the world of software. You never
know what's legal where and what isn't. I guess Knoppix
is willing to take a chance, while others, especially in
N. America, are not. I've got a Sony DVD that worked fine
with Xine, but the Warner Bros DVDs did not. Warner
encrypts its DVDs with CSS. Sony doesn't. So for Warner
you have to find the CSS decrypting file. That's just the
way it is.
In the meantime a friend of mine just copied the necessary codecs from the Knoppix 3.4 CD and into the appropriate folder in SuSE.. And voila! I now can watch all my movies in SuSE 9.1.

Hello Indigo1,
This site has rpms constantly updated rpms for all the xine stuff,
including DivX.....
if you dual-boot, you can also point xine to the location of the win32 dll's on your windows partition, or copy the dll's into a directory on your linux partition - just another possibility that might save a few of you the trouble of locating and downloading the various codec 'packs' on the internet.
