Still having Java problems with mozilla

Hi all,

I thought I fixed this problem the other night with the help of elluva,
but I still have a Java problem, can anyone help, ?

I downloaded the the non rpm version, I then extracted the bin file
to /home/lozz/

I then created a directory in /usr/local/ called Java, Then i copied the extracted directory to /usr/local/java/

Then i copied
/usr/local/java/jre<version>/plugin/i386/ns610-gcc32/libjavaplugin_oji.so
To
/usr/lib/mozilla/plugin/

Using
cp -r libjavaplugin_oji.so /usr/lib/mozilla/plugin/

When I goto "help" about plugins, i see that java is installed as a plugin,

I then go to a website that uses Java and mozilla closes instantly - crashes,

Before i tried to install java i would goto the same website and it would say install java plugin,

Im getting there slowly with the help of you guys,

All I want java for is to VNC into a windows machine on my network,

Thanks for Reading

Lozz

I don't know if this is the entire problem, but I think it is part of it. You don't want to copy the java plugin to the mozilla directory, you want to create a link to it. So jump into your /usr/lib/mozilla/plugin directory and issue:
ln -s /usr/local/java/jre<version>/plugin/i386/ns610-gcc32/libjavaplugin_oji.so

That will create a link from the mozilla plugin directory to the java plugin.

First link it right. Use a soft link like HangDog posted.

The reason mozilla is crashing is a permission problem. After you properly add the soft link log out and log in as root. Use mozilla to test applet, everything should work now. Logging back in as root is recommended from what I've read however I got it to work logging back in as a user.

Wanna test what I just said. Your mozilla browser is crashing right now when you hit an applet on the net. Do this "chgrp <your_group> /usr/lib/mozilla/plugin/lib* ". Now go back to the site your browser crashed at and you'll notice no more crash, however you still have no applet. Don't forget to change group back if you do this.

java issue with mozilla

hi all new to linux and this site see similar question posted and followed directions but just like previous user after creating soft link using ln -s /usr/java/j2sdk1.4.2_03/jre/plugin/i386/ns610-gcc32/libjavaplugin_oji.so /usr/local/mozilla/plugins/libjavaplugin_oji.so i now go to a java page and the browser closes immediately. i tried logging in as another user, logging on and off as root and rebooting. also being new to linux i don't understand the posting about changing permissions but here are the permissions on my java file...-rwxr-xr-x 1 root bin 281904 Nov 18 19:53 libjavaplugin_oji.so. thanks newbie really wants to move from window and needs help.
