Step by step procedure for installing Mplayer

Hello everybody!

I have downloaded mplayer onto Yellow Dog 6.1.from mplayerhq.com

The file shows up on my desk top screen.

How do I install this file?

Where do we go from here?

I need a step by step tutorial on how to install this or any other file onto YDL.

I can't make heads or tails of this operating system.

Thank you

Yellow Dog should have yum configured.
Why not try installing it through the package manager first?

yum install mplayer.

Yeah you type the command in the terminal
You need to be root to install any package. So either su to root or use sudo if available.

Thank You

I right clicked on the mplayer file folder and opened it in the terminal and:

[Ted@localhost mplayer-checkout-2009-02-08]$ yum install mplayer
Loading "installonlyn" plugin
Config Error: Error accessing file for config file://///etc/yum.repos.d/yellowdog-base.repo
[Ted@localhost mplayer-checkout-2009-02-08]$

What does this mean and what do I do now?

Thank you

You are supposed to do it as super user as I said before.
Use
Code:
sudo yum install mplayer

[Ted@localhost mplayer-checkout-2009-02-08]$ sudo yum install mplayer

In which case, use
Code:
su
As in:
Code:
su
<enter root password>
yum install mplayer

Mplayer has finally installed!!

Where is it?

How do I use it?

Now how do I use it to watch flv. files?

All I can seem to find is Totem and it wont open flv. files.

Wow!! this is confusing.

Thank again

It should usually get installed in Applications > Sound & Video.
If you do not see it there then right click the file and ask it to open it with Mplayer.

Dear Maxne,
Please do not hijack other people's threads. Even if your problem is similar to the one in this thread we start getting x-conversations and it becomes difficult to know who is saying what to whom. Try asking your question in a new thread with a good title like: "Need help installing vlc" and give as much information as you can relating to your problem and your system.
Cheers,
jdk
