Step by Step on how to set $PATH

I have a program that has a GUI which I have placed in /usr/local/bin however when I invoke the program I receive the following error:

Unable to find a supported JDK or JRE version. Version 1.3.1 or higher is required.
Check your installation and use +javahome to specify the JDK or JRE location

I have since installed Java into the usr/local/ directory however I am now just totally Lost! Additionally, I believe that i have tried to install Java several times with no luck.

1) Where should java be installed to have system wide access to all programs?
2) How can I place the Java location in my $PATH? here I am going to need very easy and detailed instructions?
3) Is there a way to ensure that the location where I intall java gets updates?

thanks in advance

(1) Manual install? /usr/local
export PATH=$PATH:/usr/local/bin
(3) watch the page you downloaded Java from for updates, and install them in the same way

You didn't mention the program you're trying to run nor the distro you're running. Assuming Ubuntu (which you posted from), why don't you just install Sun's Java from the Ubuntu repositories? That would be easier and it would update at the same time you update other packages.
