Step by Step Migration Process of AIX to RedHat & Hp-UX to RedHat
 

Hi,

I am new to Migration. Haven't done before. Have AIX5 and HP-UX 10 & 11 Servers. Need to Migrate the applications (Weblogic, Apache & Jboss) from AIX to RedHat and from HP-UX to RedHat.

Please help in providing a very easy and step by step process of migrating. Need it urgently.

This is not urgent for anyone here. We volunteer our time here, so don't tell us to hurry. Also, your question is very vague...migrate what? The configurations? Addresses? What??

Doing a basic RedHat installation is trivial. Installing Apache is also trivial, done by typing in "yum install apache2". Both JBoss and Weblogic have installation docs, available through the RedHat knowledgebase. Since it's 'urgent', you can Google and find it, or call RedHat support (since you're paying for it with your RedHat subscription).

I know it's not urgent for anybody and I completely understand that you guys volunteer over here. The reason I put hurry is that if I know in advance I would eventually be prepared for the coming up tasks that I've never done and would remember your support forever. My question is not to annoy you, hopefully if you understand my post I first put a please and then said it urgently. Sorry if you mistook it and nobody needs to take this thing personally. Pardon my approach if it was vague. As I never did any kind of migration, I truly didn't had any idea of what would be done over there.

Anyways, I am trying to re-frame my question? What would be the steps to migrate from AIX5 or HP UX-11 to RededHat AS-5.4. Please suggest me a method for application migration that would include Configurations, Addresses and anything that might be pretty much taken care of in the migration process?? Sorry as this is my first time migration, I am unable to provide you with complete info?

Better read this now, so you can understand TBOne's reaction, 'cause he was right. Really, read it *now*. Understand it will save you a lot of grief in the long run.

If you're going to use RHEL, it will be better to suscribe and pay for its support. If you're newbie to gnu+linux, that will be the *easiest* way.

Well, I gave you the steps already. As HasC pointed out, pay for your RedHat subscription. After that, their tech support people are there to help you, 24/7, via phone, online, and email.

As far as 'migrating', do what I suggested above. Install Apache, Jboss, and Weblogic. Apache will install via the command I gave you. Jboss and Weblogic have detailed installation instructions on their websites. Do the installations. Since we don't know how you've installed and set things up on HP/UX or AIX, we can't tell you what to do. Best suggestions would be to find the configuration files for those bits, and examine them. Find out what's different between the ones on those systems, and the new one on Linux. Make the changes as needed, and test the applications.

There's not going to be a forum that tells you everything, in detail, for a custom migration. It's too broad a question, with too many variables. So follow the broad steps outlined, learn what you're doing, and when you're done, you'll know the system inside and out. If you don't want to, hire a consultant to move it for you.

Not just that we are not familiar with your setup. IE what customized settings you have or customized applications you are running? Are these applications that were built in house or did you purchase these applications.

However If I am going to take a stab at it;

1. Create backup of all production servers.
2. Get New Red Hat servers up and running.
3. Place New servers on a seperate network for now.
4. Install all services needed on your red hat boxes. (AIX and HP-UX both have different structures. IE Linux /etc/fstab = AIX /etc/filesystems) So their services files will be different so you can't just copy over these files and expect them to work.
5. Copy the applications to their new servers.
6. Once everything is tested I would give each server the same name and ip as the one it is taking over for. Once you do that shutdown both servers and move the new Red Hat server over to production.

That way if it doesn't work you can go back to the old server and have minimal downtime.

Course this is just a really quick and dirty way. Yours will probably be more indepth.
