Static WiFi problem in Dual Booted System. Dynamic WiFi working
 
I have dual booted my Lenovo laptop with Window 7/Ubuntu 15.10. As I am new to the Linux OS, I am gradually reading up and learning things (A big thanks to this forum).

I have no problem accessing Internet via wired connection now. Similarly I can also use Internet over wireless connection at my work (SSID and password are only requirement). But at my hostel I have to manually enter static ip details (password not required).

I can access the static wireless connection using window 7, however it is whole another story with Ubuntu. My laptop does get connected to SSID:Hostel, but disconnects instantenously. ping returns "Destination Host Unreachable" result.

I am still to find a solution to my problem. I have even tried sudojuice static ip procedure and kayodake instructions. It totally eliminate wifi existance.

Broadcom wireless chipsets usually require a couple of extra steps to get working.

This should help: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Wi...Driver/bcm43xx

You could also try going to Software and Updates-->Additional Drivers. When you run that, Ubuntu can often find the Broadcom drivers automagically.

If you're not suffering from driver issues, you might need to do things more manually for hospitality wifi. Like trying to open up a website with a gui web browser after making the connection for the captive portal.

# ifconfig wlp4s0 up
(make sure the driver is loaded and it's ready for business)

# iwconfig wlp4s0 essid "HOSTEL"
(tell it where to connect to)

# dhclient -4 -v wlp4s0
(get a connection)

$ iceweasel google.com

...

But not always that simple as there's many access points and you might need to "select" the specific access point (strongest signal) for your location. As the default one that it tries might be undesirable.

# iwlist wlp4s0 scanning | less

(where the FF's are the MAC address of the desired access point with quality 70/70 hopefully)

Back when "quirky" drivers were more common you would have to modprobe the driver manually and set things like ESSID first or it would fail until the module was unloaded and reloaded. And sometimes having to set ESSID twice or it didn't take. Unfortunately the nicer configuration tools are incapable of coping with quirky drivers and the CLI route is basically the ONLY route with half a chance at success for those drivers / chipsets. I've gotten most of my broadcom chipsets to work in linux. Although probably > 50 of the time I've had to find firmware for them that wasn't the default provided by most distros. Sometimes needing something more bleeding edge, sometimes needing firmware that was more ancient.
