Static IP Initialization in Boot String

Is there is a way to specify a static IP address in the parameters supplied to the Linux kernel at boot time? I know that I can do it with a start-up script called from my rcS file but it would be really convenient to specify it in my boot parameters.

If there is a way to do this, can someone please supply an example or a link that describes how it is done?

Why do you want to do this out of curiosity? There may be better alternative methods, as far as I know there is no way to specify that information at boot as a kernel parameter.

If you really want to go this route, you could write a startup script which parses /proc/cmdline to retrieve the IP address.
