startx problem

I just installed a fresh copy of Mandriva 2005. I can startx from root but not any other user. I get:

"startx" produces - "Authentication failed - cannot start X server.
Perhaps you do not have console ownership?"

I tried touch /var/lock/console/user but this did not work.

Did you set up anything or did you just install and do startx?

You might have to set up XF86 or xorg to your monitor and video card

The installer took care of this. Startx works for root so it might be a permision thing.
