Unhappy startx hangs on RHLinux screen

Need help because I can't deal with a text prompt. Must have a GUI!

I have updated from RH 6 to RH8, and can't seem to get startx to work.
Seems to start, but then it will just hang with the RH Linux graphic. Mouse doesn't work at all. Its just an X in the middle of the screen. This happens with x, gdm and kdm. Gdm and Kdm both will get to the graphical logon screen but then hang again at the same screen as x.

I have run redhat-config-xfree86 which found my monitor and video card no problem. I have a Diamond Viper 550 vid card.

/var/log/XFree86.log.0 gives no errors (except about not being able to init the Speedo font dir.)

Any ideas?

Don't know but at first glance X isn't configured properly. There is a graphical program that will configure it in a sort of reasonably brain dead way.
