StartX Fails
 

Since I upgraded my system last weekend and reistalled everything, Xwindows won't start. Everything worked find on my old system. My new system is a AMD 4200+ dual core with a x800 PCI-E video card. It appears that I am unable to install the VMWARE tools as well. I get an error that goes something like:

(EE) Failed to load module "vmware" (Module does not exist,0)
(EE) No devices detected.

Fatal server error:
No screens found.


XI0: fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0" after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining.

Any info would be much appreciated.

well the vmware module is included as part of the base xorg-x11 driver set.. can you do a "locate vmware" to find /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/vmware_drv.o or similar? what version of X are you running? my vmware module comes from here..

[root@kermit ~]# rpm -qf /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/vmware_drv.o
xorg-x11-6.8.2-37.FC4.49.2

that's on Fedora Core 4 of course...

Thanks for the reply. There isn't anything related to VMWARE in the drivers folder. I am using SUSE 10.0.

i'd suggest reinstalling xorg-x11 then

I reinstalled the xorg-x11 from YAST without any luck. The vmware driver still doesn't show up in the drivers folder.

I also completely reinstalled SUSE 10.0. I noticed a couple of things. First, during the Hardware Configuration, it just hangs at Analyzing Your System. The "Next" option is highlighted and the installation is able to continue. Then, in the YAST Control Center, if I highlight the Graphics and Monitor section, it just sits there for a second, the screen flashes, but no options are available.

Forgive me, I am a newbie:( It worked just fine on my old system until it rolled over and died. The only difference is that I am force to load the 64 bit version. There doesn't seem to be an option to load the 32 bit version.

Okay, so I just installed SUSE 10.0 from the 5 disk set 32-bit instead of the DVD and everything works fine. I will try to install the 32-Bit version off of the DVD to see what happens...

Well, it looks like the DVD might be the culprit. The setup still uses Yast, but some ugly, less user friendly version. I'm going to stick with the 5 CD set. It takes 1/2 the time to install it using the 5 CDs than the 1 DVD.
