So are you trying to startx as root or a a regular user? You need to be root to do so. As root, you can also use this command:

gdm start

I can run startx as a regular user on my machine, in Ubuntu and slackware s, you shouldn't run x as root anyways

Yea, you must be right. It's not a command I use too often but the last time I did I was simply denied permission. I wish I remembered which distro. It could even be one of the BSDs for all I know.

Check the output of the following commands:

cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf | grep driver

cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf | grep HorizSync

cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf | grep VertRefresh

Nothing happens when I type those commands on. Or better yet...what should be happening?
