startx --> black screen (slackware10, geforce4mx64mb)
Used DOS/Windows all my life, making the switch.
Running dual boot winxp/slackware10 on p4 2.4ghz, 768mb ram, geforce4mx64mb. Booting off lilo to 1024x768 (my lcd monitor's native resolution), 256 colors. Everything works fine, boots perfectly, no errors, i can login as root. But then if I put startx or xinit, i get a black screen and the indicator led on my monitor goes orange--- as though it were switching video modes. But it just sits there like that. ctrl+alt+del, CR, gets me back to console. I can see a list of startx errors and a kde stop message. How can I fix this? I'm sure it's something simple, but I basically have no clue what I'm doing. Docs I found suggest some config utils but /usr/X11R6/bin/XF86Setup does not exist, nor does /usr/X11R6/bin/xf86config. /usr/X11R6/bin/xwmconfig works fine, I picked KDE. Thanks..... EDIT: thought I should mention that video console mode 1024x768x256 works fine. Cute penguin. |
I think in commandline mode, every thing is case sensitive. You will have an XF86Config file.
It sounds to me like your monitor cannot handle the res/refresh rate that the gui is after. Perhaps someone else can direct you how to do this in commandline mode, as I don't |
Seriously man, them files dont exist.
I set the refresh rates from the monitor specs in /etc/X11/xorg.conf. Now the monitor says "Cannot display this video mode." Clearly a message hardwired into the monitor, as it's in some nice sans serif font smack in the middle of the screen. |
