Here's some examples

Switch to another desktop without closing KDE: For example fluxbox
Ctrl Alt F2
startx `which startfluxbox` -- :2

Exit fluxbox before pressing Ctrl Alt F7 to get back into KDE

Start another instance of KDE: startx -- :2

Start another Xsession without closing present Xsession: gdmflexiserver

Restart the Xserver with the keys: Ctrl Alt Backspace
