startup problems w/ overclocking
 

Hi, im an extreme noob to linux, im using red hat 9, and when i installed RH on my new harddrive my mobo and cpu settings were stock. and today i noticed that my bios wasnt set up right, and that it was underclocked, about 300 mhz slower than it should be, so i bumped up to where it was supposed to be. and i restarted and i could load windowsXP fine and then when i tried loading RH it would start doing the checklist, get through it, and then i would get some huge error code. so i retried booting about 3 times with current settings, then put the bios backt o the way it was, and RH booted right up no probs. any ideas? please ima total newb, sorry for the extremely long post.

What motherboard and proccessor are you using? It is possible that a setting is not right in the bios (such as voltage or bus speed) even if the actuall clock speed is correct. Also be sure that it IS the right speed - for instance, an AMD 2600 doesn't actually run at 2,600 MHZ, but something like 1,200-1,400 MHZ (not too sure on the specifics).

XP as well as Win 2000 will often refuse to boot if the CPU or bus is not set correctly.

Im using a MSI KT4 Ultra Mobo with an athlon XP2000+ and when it loads the bios in the beginning it said amd athlon 1700+ not 2000+ thats how i know its not running right. and im a pretty experienced user, and know quite a bit about bios setups, and im pretty sure its right. although Linux might be alot more picky than XP.

I to am a newbie to Linux but not to overclocking. The processor is only ment to handle so much before it gives you it's virtual fingure and crashes during boot. Though it loads well with XP the processor might be going to fast to boot Red Hat. Try toning down your multiplier bit by bit untill you find a good stable setting

I'm not a newbie to Linux at all, in fact, I've been using it since mid 1998 on and off. I have, however, been windows free now for nearly two years. My question isn't exactly on topic, but it's a good as place as any, I suppose. I'm fine with software, hardware is where I have no idea what I'm doing. I have one computer that won't even respond to my building it. The other, the one I'm on right now, has a cpu that's way too slow. It's a Covington Celeron 300mhz. I want to overclock it. I know I can, I just do not know how. I've checked out several guides, but they don't make much sense to me. My BIOS doesn't offer any screen to modify the CPU. Also, I cannot find a linux utility to do it for me. I am running harddrive installed Knoppix (mostly just debian now). Does anyone know of an app or utility, or can give me instructions on how to overclock?

I no little about linux, hence why im posting. But I do know that if you can not change settings on your board via bios and or MB jumpers, then your pretty much out of luck. I would look into an old ax63 aopen board for your slot 1 card, something that will allow you to change it in the bios and or jumpers.

My prob..

I have a AMD +1700 tbred B in windows I run it all day with settings at 10@200 2.0gig on 400mhz. I have my mem downclocked to 133 being that i only have pc2100.

I had redhat 8. installed under no OC settings. When i hit the changes to 400mhz, my kernel died created a fault in my file system and everything. But windows booted fast and unharmed.
from what ive read it seems it happens alot with redhat. I chucked it after awhile for other reasons conserning my MB (Epox 8dra+) Im using SuSE 8.2, I like alot better. but do u think that maybe its linux itself or the distro that cant handle the speed?
