Starting X in command prompt question

Hello

I run Mandrake 9.2 and I have set the boot option so that it does NOT startx automatically. I find it more stable like that and besides, it's useful if I need to log in as root.

Anyway, the catch to this is that from the prompt I can only start x with KDE. Is is possible to start x from the command prompt and have it load a desktop of my choice, like Gnome or Blackbox (I have them all installed)

Thanks!

startx doesnt work?

xinitrc holds the files to start kdm and Window managers.

actually, just type:
init 5

to go into Xserver status.

Startx DOES work... but it only boots into KDE. I want to know if I can boot into Gnome or another desktop.

Edit the [home dir]/.xinitrc file. It chooses which wm to use. If there isn't one, just create one and put in the wm you want (like 'gnome-session' for gnome).

Yeah i gave up on this same 'dilema' and gave in to starting the xserver on boot because it is kinda nice actually and if you nee to log in as root just press ctrl+alt+{F1,F2,...,F6} (F7 is the xserver) it isnt that hard

Patbuzz86 got it right. it is very easy to log in a console that way.
Also if you chose the kde logging manager you can chose from there what desktop manager to log in. You get the options to log on anyone.

type "xwmconfig" in the prompt so that all is well
its a x winmanager chooser as a default for "startx"
thats the easyer way

'xwmconfig' is in Slackware only.
