starting wireless internet for the first time on CentOS

Dear All,

I've just installed CentOS 5.3 on my laptop and trying to connect to wireless internet connection at my home but I've found no success so far. I have a key on my laptop that turns blue when wifi is activated, but it is always red in linux so I guess I need to install some drivers, but I dont know what they are. When I use Windows, it automatically turns blue without doing anything. Also, yum doesnt work as well as its not connected to internet...

any help is much appreciated..

thanks in advance..

Did you really have to use CentOS-5.3 on your laptop?
AFAIK -5.3 has a driver problem with Wifi card.

I had the same issue. It worked for me when I installed Ubuntu. You might want to give that a shot for your laptop. Commands are a little different in terms of the package manager and a few things here and there but you will be able to figure it out it's not too hard.

Hello shlp14789, welcome to LQ,

the first step would be to look which wireless-adapter your computer has. Please post the output of
lspci -k | grep -iA5 wireless

I think laptop or WiFi card model would be much useful.
Why CentOS 5.3 if 5.6 is already available?
