Starting udev on CentOS problem
 

Hey all, I"m new to these forums. I work at an ISP and want to be something like a system admin one day, so I'm learning Linux (our mail and DNS servers are a flavour of Linux too.) My goal is to build two mail/DNS/FTP/web servers, one with CentOS and the other Fedora, so they can communicate and work efficiently.

I've just installed CentOS 5.1 on some crapbox computer laying around the store. It installed fine, but when I get to the bootup screen, it reaches

Starting udev:

and stays there. Doesn't time out or error or anything. The only thing that looks strange on the bootup screen is this:

Memory for crash kernel (0x0 to 0x0) nowithin permissible range

What does this mean? Can it be fixed?

I don't think the memory message means anything much - I know I get it on one of my boxes and enverything else is fine. That doesn't help a lot I know.

The only thing I have found searching centos.org and google is to try upgrading the kernel. what are the specs of the box? maybe its not enough to run centos properly? jsut a thought. are you running the gui or cli?

@billymayday: I had a quick look there too. It seems that the message is more of a warning and not really a problem to anything. As far as I researched, it's not the problem. I thought I'd include it anyway.

@phpnewb72: It should be running in CLI, afaik. Not too sure of the specs of the box, but I do know that it ran CentOS 4.5 with no issues, so unless there's been a big boost since then, I don't think that's the problem. Also, I wouldn't know how to update the kernel.

there were some upgrades that happened upstream of centos - meaning in RHEL - to the v5 release that required a little more robust hardware. I had servers that ran 4+ well, that had issues with centos5, that was a company ago and I wish I could remember what the issues were. It doesnt seem that the error is critical to the operation of the box so you could most likely ignore in the short term. also, I have to say the centos mailing list is pretty helpful.

Out of interst, does Fedora boot OK on that machine (that will be a later kernel).

Also try a live CD for CentOS if you can

Actually, Fedora is on a separate machine at my house (CentOS is at work). I'm having trouble with Fedora too =( but I can't remember the problem there. I was going to try a reinstall, but now I've misplaced the damn DVD. >=(

for this problem i think is a problem of peripherals on the computer the system doesn't reconize or not found one device when starting. uninstall it!!! it will be ok!!!

Welcome back. This thread is over four years old and featured CentOS-5.1 (at 5.8 now), a "crapbox computer" (whatever that qualification means in terms of HW) and an original poster (OP) who hasn't logged in in four years. Now your reply, while being rather generic, does have a valid point as removing peripherals can be helpful during troubleshooting but four years is a lot of time in terms of hardware, kernel development and distribution releases. Unless you have a unique, specific and to the point follow-up to make please next time redirect your efforts to more recent threads as much as possible.
