Starting Kdump : failed (Fc10-86_64)

Hello to All,

I'm posting here because I believe it occurs not only in Fedora.
(have been reading in lot's of forums ,but no correlation found)

So , on boot I get : Starting Kdump : failed ;

Strange however ,on shutdown ,kdump appears again sometimes as
failed to close.

Logically ,when it wasn't started ,it can't shutdown :)

Question remains : why doesn't it start ?

Anyone a idea ?

Kind regards

martin

Starting Kdump ..... Failed ,,, Solved !

SOLVED ,

well after two day's experimenting ,a lot of reboots ,finally

Whit the B-release Fc1O ,there where "some" troubles ,witch by following the test forums etc.
a lot of experiments ,and patience ,most of them I had resolved .

However ,one problem was persistent ,by each reboot I saw " starting Kdump : Failed .

Because ,as before ,some of the problems where related to Selinux ,I have rebooted in permissive mode

,to no avail .

Then I fschk'ed the boot partition ,no failures ,not happy :)

Manually invoking didn't gave salvage to :

service kdump start mislukt (failed)

There are no log's or other means to find some clues ,and the comment "failed" doesn't help.

Because I want to join the test league ,I needed to install my own PC in good order ,
so I didn't retreat ,instead installed de kerneldebug packages .

(wanted to do anyhow ,but then : Kdump has to work properly !)

As in > /usr/share/doc/kexec-tools-2.0.0/kexec-kdump-howto.txt< ( Good Info ) ,I proceeded :

Installing:
crash x86_64 4.0-7 fedora 1.7 M
kernel-debuginfo x86_64 2.6.29-0.45.rc2.git1.fc11 rawhide-debuginfo 290 M
Installing for dependencies:
kernel-debuginfo-common x86_64 2.6.29-0.45.rc2.git1.fc11 rawhide-debuginfo 35 M

Rebooted after the configurations (reserve 128M@16 etc.) ,and ... noppes ,no good (Expected)

Then only "intuitive" handling would help.

I deleted initrmdsk*.dump in boot , manually invoked : service kdump start ... failed.

A yum reinstall kexec-tools and reboot ,,, Bingooo !

To be honest ,I don' t now why the original install didn't worked ,but the problem is Solved .

Kind regards

Glad to hear it - I keep intending to test it under F10 (_64), but haven't yet.

True, but the shutdown scripts (as well as the start ones) are built at install. Just shutdown everything that was started - or attempted to start. Sometimes "smarts" are built into the shutdown (to check if it actually is running say), sometimes not.

@ sig00,

Thank you for the hint on the shutdown scripts ,meanwhile I had the like in mind.

Kdump really works nice ,I did the tests as in :

>/usr/share/doc/kexec-tools-2.0.0/kexec-kdump-howto.txt<

Thanks and regards

Martin
