Starting ethernet connection for Ubuntu 10.04

The initial setup of a newly downloaded 10.04 distro has only the "lo" and "wlan0" connections.

I have read a little about getting internet started with this distro but when I tried "ifconfig eth0 up" it only returned to me: <eth0: ERROR while getting interface flags: No such device>

I am using a broadband SURFboard SBG6580 and don't know my settings..... how do I set it up ?
