Start programs when Xwindows starts?
I have a laptop running linux that I am trying to make my full-time OS. I am using RH9, and I left it as a gui interface for login. I run an IM client that I want to run when I log in and Xwindows has had a chance to load all the way.
I figure I could just put an entry in one of my startup files like the .bashrc or .bash_profile, but I occasionally will log into the laptop from other machines, and I only want the IM client to start up when I run an X session. Any help would be appreciated. |
In RH 9 there is an option to set program that startup when X starts. Go to the "hat" then Preferences, More Preferences, then sessions. There is a tab that says "startup programs" Put your program in there. The number associated with it is the "importance" of the startup program (sorry for the crappy word to describe). I would say set it somewhere between 80-100, but adjust according to your preference. This will also start everytime you log in to the machine, so not just when the computer starts. If you want it to start when the computer starts up ONLY, you could put the command into /etc/rc.d/rc.local.
Hope this was a help :) |
Thanks Ryan, that seems to have taken care of it perfectly.
Off topic; where in Iowa are you at? I lived in Des Moines until I was 12, then I moved to Lamoni and finished Jr. High & High School there, and went to Graceland College there as well. |
I grew up in ankeny and now I go to school in Ames at ISU
