Start kdm instead of gdm

I am running debian sarge. The default display manger is gdm. I would like to start kdm instead. How do I do this?

Also. How would I start X server and kdm/gdm mannually instead of automatically?

Thanks, Peter

First apt-get install kdm then answer the question yes if you want to make it your default display manager, if already installed dpkg-reconfigure kdm and answer yes for the default. Then to start from the command line as root you would /etc/init.d/kdm start or restart if it was already running change to gdm for it. To disable the starting of both if this is what you want then rm /etc/rc2.d/S99kdm to remove the link that starts kdm, again change to gdm to remove that one as well then you will start with a console login.

Thanks for the suggestions. I followed your advice for kdm, and it is now my default display manger. I have not turn off the 'auto' start of X server or kdm yet. I will let you know how this goes.
