Please describe the following:
1) The manufacturer of your video card (Intel/NVidia/ATi). Even better if you specify exact model. Relevant paragraph from lspci -vv output would be fine.
2) Which driver do you use. Have you opted to use opensource/proprietary driver? For Intel the only driver is their own opensource one; for NVidia there is opensource nv driver and closed nvidia one; for ATi there are opensource radeon/radeonhd drivers and closed source fglrx one. /etc/X11/xorg.conf can probably be posted to answer these questions.
3) Did you take any measures to specifically enable/disable DRI acceleration? glxinfo command will (among the other things) tell you whether direct rendering is used.
4) Did you try to switch to console before suspending (Ctrl-Alt-F1)? Does notebook come up fine? Does it hang when you try to switch back to X session?
