standard output/system mail?

Hi all, I started using linux (yoper) and notice the lack of the "mail" command. I have used Solaris 8/9 and use mail for system messages or for standard output for processes run in the background.

I don't see any packages available for "mail". Do I need to install pine or such? or am I missing something obvious? (probably). I tried searching but mail is such a generic term its hard to find what I am looking for
