SSL stands for Secure Socket Layer. It is a collection of libraries that programs such as SSH use for encryption and secure networking over the internet.

you can look at SSL as a private line between you and where you connected to.. on this line everything is encrypted so no1 can read what you've typed because you need a key to decypher it.
