ssh -X

I'm trying to ssh -X into my box at work. While I can manage to launch my apps on a red hat server, I have a Debian box where it doesn't work. For instance, if I try to run evolution is gives me the following error:

Gdk-WARNING **: locale not supported by C library

Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display:

Any ideas? Could it be becuase xdm is running locally already?

Thanks in advance!

You should define your $DISPLAY env variable
export DISPLAY=remote_machine:0.0
ssh -X username@remote_machine

I typed export DISPLAY=remote_machine:0.0 (where remote_machine is the name of the server i wanted to connect to). It gave me a command not found error. Also, I am a little confused as to why ssh -X would work when I connect to a redhat 7.1 server but not a Debian 3 server? It's got to be something on Debian, not my local *nix machine.

Thanks,

try on debian machine
xhost +

It gives me this:

xhost: unable to open display ""

Run it from XFree.

Okay, here's the solution..

/etc/hosts did not have 127.0.0.1 mapped to localhost and
ssh forwarding was disabled in /etc/ssh/sshd_config

Obvious in retrospect, but wow did this one cause me some headaches!
