ssh win2k -> linux & run a gtk app

Hi,

I would like to run a gtk+ app on my linux box but do it from my windows box. I don't need to see the entire linux desktop, just one application.

I've installed putty on win2k and I have shhd running on fc2. I can connect to the fc2 computer from the windows box and login. But when I try run the app I get:
(MonoDevelop:3545): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display:

What do I need to do at this point? Install Gtk on Windows?

Thanks for any help,
Al

In order to do that you need to have an XServer running in windows.

The way X fowarding on SSH works is it forwards the X11 calls across the network. Windows doesn't understand X11 out of the box. Check out Cygwin/X. It is a free XServer for windows. There are others out there as well, some that might be free, others that aren't, but I have only ever used Cygwin/X.

Thanks, I'll try that out now. I'm wondering if X will be enough though since monodevelop is a gtk app?

X is all you need. The application is actaully running on the linux box. All that is being transfered over the network is the X11 commands so you get the display on your end.
