ssh problem with rsync daemon

I am trying to run ssh commands remotely to a server that is running an rsync daemon and I think the daemon is intercepting my ssh commands. It works when I type
ssh 192.168.1.42
and type the password but when I want to write a script that sends commands and when I type a simple ls command like
ssh 192.168.1.42 ls
I get "@RSYNCD: 29" after I type in the password and it hangs.
The command above works when I go from the server to another computer that is not running an rsync daemon.
I'm fairly new to Linux and haven't seen anyone else with my problem so I'm sure that it's something dumb I haven't thought of but I can't figure out what that is. Thanks for your help.

When I try that command (ssh user@ip -c ls) I get an error that says:
Unknown cipher type 'ls'

I think you may have broken your shell. I have a good tutorial on rsync which I've used before. http://www.fredshack.com/docs/rsync.html. Check it out. Alternatively you can just use rsync over ssh and you dont actually need to run the rsync daemon, if it is giving you issues.

If you can log in some how, type chsh and set it back to /bin/bash, if this is indeed the case.

I think you're right about the broken shell. I tried it on another server running an rsync daemon and it worked just fine. Also when I changed the shell it worked. Thanks for all your help!!
