ssh login with group

I have a shared directory where 3 people work on files. It is owned by a group that all 3 belong to. However, whenever someone ssh into it and change a file, it is updated to "user":nogroup. This then prevents other users from updating files, because the file is no longer owned by the shared group. I also don't want them to have to manually set the group back each time they update the file...and I want to keep the "others" permission to readonly.

So, what I would them to do is like something along [ssh "user":"shared_group"@server]. However, when testing that and touching a file, it still isn't put into the correct "shared" group.

I think I'm overlooking something simple as this seems like it would be a common need.

Any help with setting up permission correctly or better way to ssh into server would be appreciated.

Tony

That's a common problem, actually. Which distro do you have on the remote machine and, and more importantly, which file system does the partition with that directory use? You can see which one using mount with no option and looking in the fifth column shown.

On EXT4, the default these days, shared directories need a little set up in advance to work as most people would expect. It's such a commonly asked question that I've written a blog post about how to set up permissions for a shared directory.

worked. Thanks a million.
Searching was only finding allowing/denying groups or organizing, but not this issue.
I appreciate the quick response and the time you previously took to create a detailed post on the subject.

No problem. It's hard problem to solve without some hint that it involves the file system. Fulltext searches aren't likely to turn up with that.
