Don't use email servers on your PC unless you _require_ them for work (ie, its' your job to act as a mail hub for an ISP).

Why is because:

* mail is hard to configure and you don't require it usually (usually, /var/log "syslog" suffices)

* they are often pre-configured to allow remote hackers to ROOT YOUR SYSTEM by sending your computer carefully crafted mails. you have to know the mail program inside and out to insure the configuration doesn't allow that

* they are ripe to be trojan horses for mass mail spammers (if your not perfect, they will use your machine to relay spam)

* you can get from your ISP or from google, send mail using anything (ie, mozilla thunderbird mail)

you said "it's your project". however in usa it's practically illegal to run a mail server: it requires authenticating with microsoft who authenticates only with google and a few others.

in the past 'mail' was used for system messages so there was some sense that it "be working". that's no longer true.

(in the past 'mail' was used for legitimate purposes, abusers could be found and arrested - their pc's seize, so there was no spam, 0 spam. that was during "the real internet". with Bill Clinton internet: with fake IP's and ipv6 only authorities can track down spammers and authorities refuse to do their work, and no one else is allowed to run servers). i ran a mail server and continually got attemps for spam relay and also virus attempts from (purportedly china)

i wouldn't help you if i knew how. i continually get spam mail from foreign servers.

What nonsense is this? Post your source where it states that "its practically illegal to run a mail server".
