squid service


After installation of squid i am having problem starting the service,
when i start the service it shows that the service has started ok
/etc/init.d/squid start
Starting MySQL: [ OK ]

/etc/init.d/squid restart
Stopping squid: [FAILED]
Starting squid: [ OK ]

when i check the status i get
squid dead but pid file exists
squid: ERROR: Could not send signal 0 to process 20266: (3) No such process


also
tail -f /var/log/squid/squid.out
squid: ERROR: Could not send signal 0 to process 22373: (3) No such process


how do i overcome this problem

Could you explain more on this? When did this happen to you? Any changes that you made before this happened? Which distribution? Anything else you are missing?

I am doing a fresh installation of squid as forward proxy.i am using centos 5.4.

And then what happens? Does that solve the issue? When installing squid first time, cache has to be initialized before you can use it.

yes i had dont that i did it again after you suggested but still there is a issue.the service doesnt seems to start.

Can you see into the logs and paste the logs here. Or do one thing, remove the squid pid file manually and then try to start the service.

Ya i did that earlier it doesnt seem to do any good
i check the logs no access logs are generated

Not access logs. squid.out logs.

the files are ther but ther is nothing in that
in squid.out it says

Removing pid file and restarting squid should do.

rm -rf /var/run/squid.pid

Can you ps or top and see if there is any zombie squid process? I can not get anything right now. Deleting the pid file and restarting the system should do it usually. If you find any squid zombie kill that as well.
I have not seen this error myself but the as the error suggests, deleting the pid file should just make life easier.
Going home now. Will think over this and try and find something helpful.
