Squid problem

I have an Rhel 5 server masquerading by Local Lan to Internet.
I have configured transparent squid and redirect the port 80 through squid port 3128 from iptables.
It is working but getting very very slow. Moreover I cannot log into yahoo mail and google mail but if I configure Proxy setting in browser I can log into yahoo mail or gmail and it is faster. And now if I remove the redirect from the iptables I can no longer go to internet from the browser(apart from browser configured with proxy settings) though trace route or ping works.
Please advice me what is wrong

From my experience I have seen that setting squid as a transparent proxy causes a few problems. It is better to directly configure it in the browser and remove the transparent setting in squid.conf. Although if you need to use the transparent settings AND want squid type filtering, implement squid with dansguardian.

When you remove the redirection in iptables, the connection to the internet doesn't work simply because I'm guessing that all out going connections on port 80 are blocked. It works in the browser after you've set the proxy because all the requests from the browser are then directed to the proxy, which then fetches pages from the internet.

search squid threads with my registered name here on linuxquestions you will get many thrads. I've wandered allot here for the same problem have a look at my blog post that might help.

Transparent squid doesn't allow you to authenticate https. so better don't use it.
