squid on ubuntu 7.10

hi guys!
first of all let me tell you that im a newbie in linux, this is my first time installing this OS and hopefully configure it using one of its capabilities. im already using it for almost a month now and im already a little bit familiar with this. i am now trying to install squid 3.0 on my desktop(ubuntu 7.10) but having problems on the installation. ive already tried browsing the net for instructions but i dont know what to follow or i guess a little bit confused on what or how to follow because of so many links. i have already installed the squid properly so i guess the next step is to configure it.

could anyone help me setting it up and hopefully give me detailed instructions on what to do. i just want to use it as a typical proxy server (monitor pc's, block unwanted sites etc.)i would really appreciate it very much!thank you

You can configure squid just by reading through squid.conf and setting all of the parameters appropriately. This is not necessarily advised in the first instance as squid.conf is quite a long config file and you'll probably have to read bits of it several times.

OTOH, on a simple installation, Ubuntu 8.04 seems to get squid correctly installed 'automagically' (in the one instance in which I've tried it) and that's quite impressive. So using the most recent version of Ubuntu that you can is advised, as the config seems to have become a lot more auto over the years.

And, on the other, other, hand, on one previous version of Ubuntu, I tried polipo, which is also a caching program, and that was a total delight to set up compared to squid - a little mini-web site, just flick a few configuration switches and its done - but I'm not sure if that's in the repositories for your version.

first of all i would like to say "thank you very much" for the help. i really really really appreciate it...=)

i have already configured the first part which is allowing a computer on-line using my proxy server and it works fine but the problem is when i
try it to 2nd pc and browse the net it just give me a blank page with no
error message.

may be before going further can i ask how do i specify/ add a specific IP
range on my proxy so that other computers can also get on-line?
i tried to configure at the buttom of the acl section but im not sure if its correct.
ex: acl linux_network src 192.168.1.4- 192.168.1.200/24

and when i restart my proxy it gives me like this..

aclParseIpData: WARNING: Netmask masks away part of the specified IP in '192.168.1.4-192.168.1.200/255.255.255.0'

i can still get on-line on the first pc but not on the rest....
