Unhappy squid install failure

I am attempting to install Squid 2.5. I am using Mandrake 10. After extracting the contents of the tarball, I used ./configure to begin compiling. Here is the output displayed during the configuration

creating cache ./config.cache
checking for a BSD compatible install... /usr/bin/install -c
checking whether build environment is sane... yes
checking for mawk... no
checking for gawk... gawk
checking whether make sets ${MAKE}... yes
checking whether to enable maintainer-specific portions of Makefiles... no
checking for gcc... no
checking for cc... no
configure: error: no acceptable cc found in $PATH

Evidently everthing was going fine until the last line. Can anyone explain to me what this error means and how I can fix it?

Thanks. I'm new to Linux and not much of a techie. I'm installing Squid in order to install and use Dan's Guardian.
