Angry SpeX and IDL

Im trying to set up IDL and SpeX to use for summer research. This is my first time using a Linux machine, and I have no idea what I'm doing. I got it all working for the most part (I think). Now when I click on one of the IDL files, an error comes up that says:

"A Java Runtime Environment (JRE) or Java Development Kit (JDK)
must be available in order to run Idlde.linux.x86. No Java virtual machine
was found after searching the following locations:
/home/medvar/ITT/idlde/jre/bin/java
java in your current PATH"

I downloaded jre and I know where it is on my computer, but I don't know how to change the path. HELP!!!
