SpeedTouch Usb and Mandrake 10 Problem

Hello to everyone (this is my first post here!)

Here is the problem:

I've got Mandrake 10 and a green Alcatel Usb Speedtouch modem. I've tried everything posted on this forum but i still can't connect to the internet.
I've corrected the usb.c file and recompiled the kernel and then used the speedtouch config script to setup my adsl. The script seem to flash the modem just fine (lights on modem blink for a while then they become solid green) but when the script says
Running: pppd call adsl

i got this in response:

ppp0: error fetching interface information: device not found

now it seems to be a pppd error, but i've got all modules installed well, so I don't have the brightest idea on what i have to do. Please help me...

Ah, i managed to get the modem working under Red Hat 9 with 2.4.x kernel.

Thanks in advance.

I've never seen this error message myself but Googling on your error message suggests that it may be a problem with the domain name server you're trying to use or possibly a firewall issue. What does it say in /var/log/syslog after you run the speedtouchconf script? Anything relevant?

Thanks for the help, but i managed to solve the problem.

I was doing something wrong with the kernel it seemed.

I actually have the same problem, my speedtouch modem works perfectly with Mandrake 9.2, but i can't have a good download speed with mandrake 10.

How did you configure your connection? PPPoe, DHCP, or other?

thanx for answering.

and please Lokhart, what did you do with the kernel?

Andrew Benton 03-22-2004 05:31 AM

Yeah, what did you do to fix it? I've just bumped into this error message five minutes ago. I've just installed College Linux to see what it's like and of course the first thing is to connect to the web. I'll have another look at it later but I haven't got the energy just now.

You've got to fix the usb.c module. You can find the tutorial doing a search with speedtouch and 2.6.4 keywords.

Doh! Dozy me! I'd forgotten to alter the kernel source http://www.mail-archive.com/speedtou.../msg05299.html
