spamassassin on linux as client only

I don't run a mailserver, just a mail client. The mx record is at my ISP.

I am running:

Fedora Core 2, gets yummed constantly

Evolution mail client (would use another if better)

procmail is installed too.

I tried to set up spamassassin by hand before. I just want it to trap spam for me. The mail won't be coming in via sendmail or any local mailserver. I'm just popping from my isp.

I probably just need to be pointed to a good article on how to set it up as just a client.

Can anyone give some advice?

thanks in advance for your time,

You have to get your email from your ISP somehow.

One solution is to use fetchmail, which will allow you to add a spamassassin as a message filter. You can then point your mail client at your local mailbox when you want to check your email.

If you happen to be using kmail, you can also set up a filter on all incoming mail (I have a regular filter matching To as my email address). Select “Pipe through” as the filter action and then enter “spamassassin -a” as the command. After going through this, spam messages will be marked as such and you can filter them accordingly. You can probably do similar things with most mail clients.

Hope that helps,
