spam problem

hi there,

I got a real spam problem.
On the server there is only one mail address and mail relaying is disabled (it passed some online tests)

but i get a bunch of "failure notice" mails.
so it seems like somebody was able to use my server and my mail address.

since i had no idea what i should do about this and some basic functions on the server like apt did not work anymore i reinstalled it (it's a hosted vm with plesk)

it seems like this did not stop, i'm still getting bounce messages.
ether these are old bounce mails or somebody is using my mail addy as fake address to send mails.
(edit: i just checked, there are new bounce mails as well)

has anybody an idea what i can to about this?

best regards

It's probably someone using your email address as a fake "From:" or "Reply-to:" or envelope from. I've gotten stuff like that before, but never enough to warrant much of a response.

Destroying all the evidence isn't an ideal way to investigate an issue.

Check the 'received' header trail to determine if the mails actually originate from your server.
My pick is a standard 'Joe-job'.

Implementing SPF and/or DKIM can reduce these a bit.
