Sox recording command outputs blank files

Hi all,
Ive tried recording using sox,by a mike, with the command:
rec -V -c 1 -s w -r 44100 somename.wav

or more simply...just
rec somename.wav

It does not give an error, but does not play anything either(just a blank for the record duration). The play command,or the "sox somename.wav -t ossdsp /dev/dsp" works fine for songs

What seems to be the problem?

thanks
Anid

If you are using ALSA, open the "alsamixer" on the command line, then press F4 to show the capture controls and check that the Capture channel is actually turned up and activated (should say CAPTUR underneath and not ------, press spacebar to toggle). You may also need to activate the Mic channel. If that solves the problem, then you can use "alsactl store" as root make the setting permanent.
