Sourcing Linux, and basic installation and usage ...
 

Hi i want to try Linux cause a guy i work with use it and he thinks its just awesome and makes it sound like heaven compared to windows

So if anyone could help me by telling me where i can find Linux and download it, how to install it and so on.
he said there are many different Linux some more easy to use and a little like windows (without the crashes and sheit) and others that are from scratch so u have to do everything for urself

i dont really know what he said, something like unbuntle or unbundle (please correct me :P)

and u cant install some .exe files so u have to use some program called WINE?

I know i am a :newbie: but i would Really, REALLY appreciate if someone could take the time to help me with this! Cause im so sick of this shitty windows and all its viruses and bugs and crap:cry:

There are many distro out there. Some do most of the work to install for you others you need to configure many options yourself like in ubuntu. Look here on this site for a list of distro. LinuxQuestions.org > Forums > Linux- Distributions. Note this is just a start. Most easiet for beginners is Mandriva and Suse. Google to there sites and see what they are about.

Now for .exe. That is and extension many Dos/Windows apps use and they do not run natively on Linux. Wine is an emulator application and will work with a large varitey of dos/windows apps. Not all of coaurse. The more basic they are the better chance of working.

Linux is defiantly a different world than dos/windows. It will take time to get used to. Since knowing someone that uses linux I am sure he can help you along the way.

Hi, if you want to try it without any real hassles, you can try one of the "live" distros like Knoppix, Mepis, Ubuntu or any of the others. I like Knoppix and Mepis for many different uses, and they are a good way to see what it is all about without doing an install and possibly not liking it. I gave copies of 4 different live distros to a guy at work and he has a lot of fun with them. He doesn't feel ready to do an install yet but he can get his feet wet and see why I am such a fan of "Linux". Good luck in your endeavors.

Thx guys im lookin around and downloading something called Ubuntu-5.10-live-i386.iso from DC++ and will try it later Ill let u guys know if i run into any problems :D
