SoundMax integrated with ASUS P4P800

I am a total newbie to linux. But somehow i managed to make this soundcard work I installed the alsa drivers. I am using Red Hat 9. But now i can't "unmute" the sound. When i try to run the Volume Control of Red Hat, it says "invalid mixer device: Unable to open audio device '/dev/mixer'. Please check that you have permissions to open '/dev/mixer' and that you have sound support in you kernel.". When i tried to detect a sound card before installing alsa drivers, i could not. Now it detects the soundcard, snd-intel8x0, but i cant make it work. Can anyone help?

try manually running the command, 'alsamixergui' and unmute that way.
