Sound volume extremely low

Ok, so I got Intrepid 32 bit up and running on my iMac with the broadcom wireless working and the ATI drivers working.

At first the sound didn't work, but I fixed that. The only problem is that the volume is extremely low. Even if I set it to 100% I can still barely hear anything. alsamixer shows 100% on the master, and it says "PulseAudio" as the card and chip.

Also, the sound is very 'tinny' like there is hardy any bass at all but treble to the max.

How can I get my sound to be louder?

Have you tried jacking up PCM(s) in alsamixer?

claudius753 11-04-2008 01:47 AM

Running alsamixer from a command line gives me only master (set at 100) and capture (set at 50).

Ok, so when I rebooted my system this morning, I now once again have no sound.

In alsamixer, master is turned all the way up. I also installed GNOME ALSA mixer and turned up everything as high as it would go.

I'm not sure what is going on.

In lspci:
Code:

00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 03)

Hey there,

it looks like the audio device that you are currently using in ALSA is the HD-audio. Are you using HDMI interface or is there no HDMI?

My card in Ubuntu (built on to the mainboard) also only has 1 volume slider for some reason (I think this is due to early stages of driver development.. cant recall the chipset at the moment)

Another alternative is to try OSS and see if that works.

claudius753 11-04-2008 01:14 PM

No, there is no HDMI port on my iMac. The listing from lspci I posted is the only entry that referred to audio, all the rest were USB controllers, networking interface cards, and video card.

How do I switch to OSS output?
