Sound used to work. Now it doesn't!

I installed Suse and had no sound trouble at all. I could play my music files (I was happy). A few restarts and programs later I get no sound. I go into my mixer, click a button thats called "IEC958" and I get a loud distorted sound. I can hear whats playing behind the distortion a little bit.
With no solution I reinstall Suse and like magic I get my sound back. Then a few restarts later and I have the same distorted sound again.
The only programs I installed were firefox, thunderbird and ogle.

My sound card is a: Creative Sound Blaster Audio PCI 128D.

Please, if anyone can help

Do you see any messages in /var/log/messages? Are there any other clues or observations that you might be able to offer?

By the way, "reinstalling the operating system" is a very Windows response. You should not have to do that.

Thanks for your help!

I can't seem to get into /var/log/messages, I do not have permission.

When I click on the speaker in the bottom right corner it has a button for mixer and it says 3d at the top. Before the sound messed up it might have looked different. It seems like it had more buttons and maybe it didn't say 3D.

I can't help it I am very windows. But I have realized that linux is way more stable. Programs don't constantly lock up.

I used yast to delete the sound card and then I configured it and it worked. I guess that will be the standered 2 day procedure.
