sound stopped working after attempting to install webcam module

Hi Guys,

I've found a lot of people with similar problems on this forum but somehow the solution to my sound agrivations still linger.

I think trying to install the quickcam module that I downloaded and compiled has somehow ousted my sound driver. It might be a securities issue, but I don't know what that means.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

>> aplay -l

so aplay doesn't see any hardware devices, but

>> lspci | grep audio
00:1f.5 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 02)
so I think everything is still being detected but alsa is not being loaded. I don't have /etc/init.d/alsasound or /etc/rc.d/init.d/alsasound so I don't know if there is another service to restart or what.

I'm using Fedora Core 8.

Any help would be great.

me again.

I've been finding this
resource useful.

And now I think my modprobe.conf is messed up:

>> cat /etc/modprobe.conf
alias scsi_hostadapter sata_promise
alias snd-card-0 snd-intel8x0
options snd-card-0 index=0
options snd-intel8x0 index=0
remove snd-intel8x0 { /usr/sbin/alsactl store 0 >/dev/null 2>&1 || : ; }; /sbin/modprobe -r --ignore-remove snd-intel8x0
alias usb-controller ehci-hcd
alias usb-controller1 uhci-hcd

#----cut here----
# I2C module options
alias char-major-89 i2c-dev
alias eth0 e1000
alias snd-card-1 snd-mpu401
options snd-card-1 index=1
options snd-mpu401 index=1
remove snd-mpu401 { /usr/sbin/alsactl store 1 >/dev/null 2>&1 || : ; }; /sbin/modprobe -r --ignore-remove snd-mpu401
does this mean my modprobe.conf is removing these sound devices?

please help.

I guess my usb microphone was taking priority and I had to add

options snd-usb-audio index=-2

to the modeprobe.conf.

So problem solved. Sorry for clogging the forums with my solo-conversation. I should have waited a few more minutes before posting.

thanks anyways. I love linux
