Unhappy Sound problems with mandrake

Hi,

I installed Mandrake 8.2 on my presario 1692, dual boot with win98. The installation went ok, I thought, but I can't hear any sounds. My sound card is an ESS Solo-1. When I go to harddrake it highlights the ESS Technology ES1969 Solo-1. I try to run the configuration tool and it says it will play some sound to test it, but it just hangs.

Could somebody please help?

Thanks Anna

So, maybe your kernel was not compiled with ESS suport.
Try to recompile your kernel ... if you know how.
I hope that you have enough knowleadge about that.
Maybe there you can chose ESS solo-1 support ...

Best regards.

During the install did it detect your sound card correctly? If so, then you won't have to recompile your kernel.

By default one of the versions of mandrake came "muted". Open up your sound mixer (in kde go to K--->Multimedia---->Sound--->Sound Mixer). Make sure the volumes are all up. Also make sure that they are all unmuted.

Try that and see what happens.

Yes, that was it. Now it works fine!

Strange though that they would do something like that. Perfect to confuse lots of newbies like me...
Thanks !
