Sound Problem with fedora core 3

i installed fedora core 3.
it detected my sound card but its sound test fails. i'm not able to hear sound.
i had redhat 9 earlier. and there this was no problem as redhat 9 detected the card and played sound also.

any solution?? plz

doues the output of the command "dmesg" say anything about your card or sound ?
what sound card you got ?
what is the output of "lsmod"
have you made sure sound isnt muted with the programs "alsamixer" and "aumix" ?

thanx!
as u guessed sound was muted.?
but how come it is by default mute. because for redhat 9 it was not so.?

any idea why it is so by default..?

thank u very much:)

Redhat 9 used the old sound system called OSS (open sound system)
with the introduction of the new 2.6 kernels, OSS was dropped in favor of ALSA (Advanced Linux Sound Architechture)

fedora 3 uses asla, and alsa is muted by default...

im not sure why... but if i had to guess, it would probably be to stop people blowing there heads off when they use the computer for the fist time with headphones, and not realsie how loud the speakers are..

i know iv done that before.

but when my friend installed fedora core 3 for him alsa was not mute by default. he has mercury chipest motherboard and i have intel original. our configurations only differ for motherboards. if alsa is mute by default then why didn't it work with mercury motherboard??
